Q. What is ASA routed mode?

A. In the routed mode, the ASA is considered to be a router hop in the network. In single-context mode, it can use the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol or the Routing Information Protocol (RIP). The routed mode supports many interfaces. Each interface is on a different subnet. You can share interfaces between contexts.

The ASA acts as a router between connected networks, and each interface requires an IPaddress on a different subnet. In single-context mode, the routed firewall supports Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), OSPF, and RIP. The multiple-context mode supports static routes only. We recommend using the advanced routing capabilities of the upstream and downstream routers instead of relying on the ASA for extensive routing needs
